The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) is a public research university with multiple campuses throughout the Rio Grande Valley region of Texas. It is the southernmost member of the University of Texas System. UTRGV was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 after the consolidation of the University of Texas at Brownsville/Texas Southmost College and the University of Texas Pan American.
The Linguistics program at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley offers students a deep scientific understanding of human language, uniquely situated in the dynamic, bilingual environment of the Rio Grande Valley. Housed within the Department of Writing and Language Studies, the program provides a strong focus on Spanish and English bilingualism, language variation, and language contact phenomena prevalent in the U.S.-Mexico border region. Students explore core linguistic areas like phonetics, syntax, and sociolinguistics, benefiting from research opportunities in labs dedicated to language acquisition and corpus analysis. The curriculum, drawing on the legacy of predecessor institutions, prepares graduates for diverse careers through rigorous study, practical application, and meaningful community engagement.
