The University of Charleston (UC) is a private non-profit university with its main campus in Charleston, West Virginia. The university also has a location in Beckley, West Virginia, known as UC-Beckley. UC was founded in 1888 as the Charleston Collegiate Institute by the Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1901, the college became affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and in 1923, it was renamed the West Virginia Wesleyan College. In 1966, the college became coeducational and in 1971, it changed its name to the University of Charleston.
